What is the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)?

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is an agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security. The agency's primary purpose is to coordinate the response to a disaster that has occurred in the United States and that overwhelms the resources of local and state authorities. In addition to disaster response among other things, FEMA sets certain standards for flooding in flood prone areas for the purpose of minimizing recurring damage from ocean and river flooding.
